Student of the Day!<\/u><\/strong>\n
Everyday, we rotate through the class for a new student of the day. Our student of the day gets to make choices about the songs we sing and poems we recite, ring our bell during rotations, and lead the class in calendar.\n
They also get to be my “assistant” of sorts, helping with demonstrations and occasionally running quick errands to the office. It’s been so fun to see everyone take on the responsibility of their day!<\/p>\n

Peace Pinwheels<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

To honor and celebrate the International Day of Peace yesterday, students made pinwheels!\n
This was a challenging task, and they helped each other and problem-solved. Then, we took them outside to meet the wind, and took a moment to send our message of peace into the world.<\/p>\n

Homework & Homework Folders<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Thank you all for helping your child practice <\/span>responsibility and organization<\/strong> through the simple routine of managing their homework folder! The goal is for students to gradually take ownership of bringing their folders to and from school each day and keeping track of what belongs inside.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the LEFT side of the folder you will find papers to KEEP:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFridge Lists\u201d:<\/strong> Their spelling words are given in their folders at the beginning of the week. They don’t necessarily have to go on the fridge, but I encourage you to put the list somewhere your student can easily see it throughout the week.<\/span>\n \n
Returned classwork and other notes home:<\/strong> I will periodically send home student work or notices from the office. <\/span>Today, there is an REI coupon from Fiona!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Buddies!<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Our class got their buddies from Matt’s class on Friday, and they had a great time getting to know each other! We will meet up with our buddies every other Friday for games and activities.<\/p>\n

The Garden Between….<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

This year we are aiming to refresh the garden that is in between Ashley’s and my classrooms. Ideally this will turn into a beautiful and comfortable space for outdoor work and activities. The other day a small group and I sat\n in the shade in the space and brainstormed about what this space could look like. The kiddos had such great ideas!<\/p>\n

Request: Cardboard<\/u><\/em><\/strong> – for laying down below the mulch – please bring in any larger pieces of cardboard, broken down and free of any staples or tape.<\/p>\n

STEAM and Rhythm & Beats<\/u><\/strong>Our <\/span>STEAM<\/strong>\n  shelf has a variety of rotating activities students can choose from as an independent center during small group rotations, or during <\/span>Choices.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today students reviewed and explored the different notes and rhythms they are learning with<\/span> rhythm sticks,<\/strong>\n  then created their own “fruit salad” 4-beat rhythms. They did amazing!<\/span>\n <\/p>\n

September Classroom Support Jobs<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

If you are able and would like to sign up for a classroom support job, I currently have two available (with multiple slots each). I will be sending a new sign-up for each month, so there will be more opportunities coming\n up! Please sign up for one date so that others may also have an opportunity, and if we still need slots filled next week I will repost. Thank you!!<\/p>\n

Towel Team – <\/strong>I’m calling it a team because I ask that your student helps out, because I will often forget to send the basket home and they may be better at remembering! This job is best done\n over the weekend – you’ll take the basket of towels home to launder and then bring them back all clean and folded and ready to go!
Water Wizard –<\/strong> Just when the students think the water cooler in our classroom\n is empty and they can’t fill their water bottle, voila! I grab the other bottle that has been magically and mysteriously filled by our water wizard and fill it up again. Our water jugs are just 3-gallons, easy to carry\n in and out from the parking lot. <\/p>\n

“Creatrilogy”<\/u><\/strong>\n  Artwork<\/u>\n <\/p>\n

Today we completed our third piece of art inspired by the books in the \n “Creatrilogy” Series by Peter H. Reynolds.<\/a>  These books inspire students to believe in their creativity, even if it’s just starting with a dot and seeing where it goes.. making a drawing that looks “ish” like it’s\n “supposed to”… or making the sky any color their imagination takes them.\n

We’ve had a fabulous first week of school!
Students are learning new routines and getting back into the swing of things. I am excited to begin our language and math routines next week, which I can tell you a little more about at our Back-to-School night, next Wednesday, September 2nd!<\/span><\/p>\n

Support, Classroom Jobs and Volunteering<\/u><\/strong>
We appreciate and need the support from our families during the school year. Support might be on field trips or in the classroom OR behind the scenes:<\/span><\/p>\n

Wishlists<\/strong>: I will periodically post a wishlist in my newsletter for items and\/or help with tasks.<\/span>
Classroom Jobs:<\/strong>\n  Please see next week’s newsletter for a classroom job sign-up. These jobs are regular behind-the-scenes tasks that significantly improve the health and cleanliness of our classroom.<\/span>
Drivers\/Chaperones:<\/strong>\n  As I finalize this year’s field trips, I will send a request for drivers and chaperones. If you would like to drive\/chaperone, please check in with the office to update your paperwork.<\/span>\n <\/p>\n

Task Wishlist!<\/u><\/strong>

Welcome to the School Year!<\/u><\/strong>\n
Welcome back to all of the returning families, and a warm welcome to those who are joining our classroom community this year!<\/p>\n

Tuesday newsletters will be sent every Tuesday with updates, special dates, requests, information, and photos about what’s going on here in our classroom.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Hi, I’m Miss Kristen!|<\/u><\/strong>
This is my 13th year at Village, and I\u2019m excited to begin another year with your kiddos!. I feel so grateful to be part of such a close-knit community where I get the opportunity to know all of our students. I love teaching in a multi-age classroom and am always learning and evolving as a teacher, finding something new to bring to each school year. Outside of school, I like singing and making music, hiking, paddling, and swimming in the river\u2026 and I have a big sweet spot for ice cream! <\/span><\/p>\n

Our first day of school is tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19th<\/u><\/strong>
<\/em>\u2022 ***Please read the VCS bulletin from today to read about traffic and parking***<\/em>\n
\u2022 If arriving early, students may hang their backpack outside the classroom and put their lunch in their cubby, then head out to play on the blacktop.\n
\u2022 I will blow my whistle to gather our class at the start of school – join us if you are able for our all-school spiral dance.\n
\u2022You may pick up your student outside our classroom, otherwise please communicate with me if you would like your student to walk out with someone else<\/em><\/strong> (an older sibling, older friend, etc.)<\/p>\n

Students should bring:\n
\u2022 Backpack\n
\u2022 lunchbox\n
\u2022 water bottle
<\/span>\u2022 A change of clothes for muddy mishaps, spills, accidents, etc (underwear, socks, leggings\/shorts). Students may keep them in their backpacks OR bring them to me in a labeled gallon-sized ziplock bag and I’ll keep them in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Communication<\/u>
<\/em><\/strong>\u2022 Please make a habit of reading both my Tuesday Newsletters and the VCS Bulletin. <\/em><\/strong>These are our main modes of communication and contain important\n details.\n
\u2022 Mornings before school are my time to prepare for the day, so they aren’t always the best time to communicate questions or conversations. If you would like to discuss something with me please send an email first, and we can\n find a time to meet in person if needed.\n
